WW 1 Faithful Freddie Submarine Binnacle Compass

A superb piece of early 20th century maritime history. This was used on Royal Naval submarines being stowed in the conning tower during operations. The Faithful Freddie would be mounted on the bridge for navigating whilst on the surface.

A beautiful piece of naval design it is completely original and has brass plaque stating, “Pattern 185” No 1019. The compass binnacle has a front viewing hatch that can be shrouded for night viewing and a separate rear hatch for a lighting unit.

Produced by kelvin, Bottomley and Baird Ltd this is First World War all brass model in full working order and hand polished.

These instruments were originally produced for the Royal Navy in 1909 and continued to be used until after the end of the Second World War. Lovingly named by the crews of the Royal Navy after a PG Wodehouse character, Freddie Rooke in Wodehouses’s 1921 book with his numerous escapes from close scrapes – a fitting tribute to this beautiful and rare design piece.
