Rockets and Missiles perfect for the Man Cave

Here at Aviation and Binoculars we try and source some of the most interesting military memorabilia ever made including our rockets and missiles perfect for a man cave.
We pride ourselves on being able to turn these military collectables into stunning items for display in any home or office environment. We are pleased to have several air-to-air and ground to air rockets that have been hand polished and mounted to produce a visual effect that shows cases the design of the rocket as well as its engineering beauty.
We will look at three rockets that we have available and provide more back ground info and technical info; the Fire streak missile, Sidewinder missile and Rapier:

Firestreak Missile

This is the oldest rocket that we have polished and mounted for display, it was first deployed in 1957 and followed on from the Fireflash rocket system.
The fireflash being Britain’s first operational air-to-air missile (we do have a Fireflash on loan to RAF Manston Museum should you require any further information).
The Firestreak was a significant leap forward with infrared homing and was the RAF’s first serious deterrent against high-speed bombers. It remained in operational service until 1988 with a more advanced version called the Red Top offering better infrared capabilities.
It was deployed on the iconic English Electric Lightning, probably the most impressive fast attack aircraft of the Cold War.
Technical info:
 Type: Passive infrared homing (heat-seeking) missile
 Manufacturer: de Havilland Propellers
 Service Period: 1957–1988
 Weight: 136 kg
 Length: 3.19 meters
 Speed: Up to Mach 3 (approx. 3,700 km/h)
 Range: Around 6.4 km (4 miles)
 Warhead: 22.7 kg annular blast fragmentation
 Guidance: Rear-aspect infrared seeker.
AIM 9 Sidewinder missile

AIM- Sidewinder Missile

Cold War innovations (1960s-1980s) – The Cold War era saw rapid development in missile technology, driven by the need to intercept increasingly sophisticated Soviet aircraft. To counter this the RAF adopted the Sidewinder missile system. Though American in origin, the AIM-9 Sidewinder was widely used across multiple platforms, including the Harrier and Tornado. Its reliability and effectiveness made it a staple of British aerial combat.

Technical info:
 Type: Annular blast-fragmentation
 Manufacturer: Raytheon
 Service period: 1956-present day
 Weight: ~9.4 kg (20.8 lb)
 Detonation Mechanism: Infrared proximity fuse
 Capabilities: &;Fire-and-forget; with helmet-mounted cueing in AIM-9X
 Speed: Over Mach 2.5
 Range: Up to 35 km (22 miles)

Rapier Missile

Rapier Missile

By the 1980s, Britain had established a solid foundation in air-to-air missile technology. These systems not only protected British airspace but also influenced future designs like ASRAAM and Meteor.

It was able to use this advanced technological know-how to produce one of the most effective short-range surface to air missiles produced of that era, the Rapier. This British surface to air missile was jointly developed by the British Army and Royal Air Force.

Technical info:
 Type: Blast-fragmentation
 Manufacturer: British Aircraft Corporation → BAe Dynamics → MBDA UK
 Service period: 1971-present day
 Warhead Weight: ~1.4 kg (including ~0.4 kg of explosive)
 Detonation Mechanism: Proximity-triggered chemical fuze
 Tracking Modes: Optical (daylight) and radar via Blindfire system
 Effective Range: 400 m to 8.2 km (0.25 to 5.1 miles)

Although now retired from British service, the Rapier was revered for its precision and modular upgrades, making it a workhorse of British air defence for nearly five decades.
