WW2 Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) Morse Control Relic

Royal Navy Ww2 Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) morse control relic. This was fitted to a MTB or MGB (Motor Gun Boat) which were extremely heavily armed fast patrol boats. They were used throughout the Second World War by the Royal Navy in defence of the coastal shore line.

In the early years of the war, MTBs saw action defending shipping against enemy torpedo boats, such as the German E boats on the southern and eastern coasts of the UK, with the faster ‘short’ boats frequently undertaking patrols hunting for the enemy.

This rare and unique historical military relic was recovered after the war by divers in the Porthcurno, Cornwall area. By the start of World War II, Porthcurno on the tip of the mainland was a critical hub for allied communications with 14 cables coming ashore, carrying some 70% of all communications.

The Morse Control system was the throttle control unit that linked the bridge to the engine room. This piece was recovered and found to have a piece of a bullet still lodged in the chain mechanism. If only historical artefacts could tell their tale!
